Abstract

924,907. Vacuum brakes. G. D. PETERS & CO. Ltd. Sept. 25, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960], No. 38360/60. Class 103 (1). In a device for controlling the vacuum brake system of railway vehicles, means is provided which can be set to maintain a vacuum differential between the train pipe and the brake cylinder to afford a reduced braking effect when the vehicle is empty, valve means 17 being provided for enabling full braking effect to be obtained when the wagon is loaded. The device comprises an upper chamber 1 having a lightly-loaded atmospheric inlet valve 5 arranged to be moved into an open position by a diaphragm 3 when air is admitted from the train pipe to a lower chamber 2, the upper chamber 1 having direct communication via passage 15 with the brake cylinder connection 14 through the valve means 17 which can be set to close the communication and open a further communication via passage 16 between the lower chamber 2 and the brake cylinder connection 14 when the full braking effect is required. The diaphragm and a vacuum control valve 12 are loaded by springs which may be adjusted or set for a particular vehicle with reference to its loaded weight or tare weight. The diaphragm and vacuum valve springs 9 and 13 are set to give a vacuum differential of five inches such that the train pipe will have five inches of vacuum before the vacuum valve 12 starts to open.
