837,253. Vacuum braking systems. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. June 3, 1958 [June 4, 1957], No. 17735/58. Class 103 (1). A vacuum braking system for rail vehicles includes a driver's valve controlling the degree of vacuum in a controf system which operates a relay valve controlling the connection of the vacuum train pipe to a vacuum source and to atmosphere. Driver's valves 3 control the vacuum in pipe 5, from pipe 7, which acts on the upper sides of linked pistons 20, 22 in relay valve 1, the lower sides of the pistons being connected to atmosphere and to the train pipe 11, 13, respectively. With the valve 3 at " release " and " go," the pipes 5 and 7 are connected and the pistons 20, 22 raised to connect train pipe with vacuum through valves 28, 30 and pipe 9. In the braking position, vacuum is reduced in pipe 5 and pistons 20, 22 lowered to close valve 28, 30 and open valve 34, 36 to admit atmospheric air to the train pipe 13 until the pressure on pistons 20, 22 is balanced when they are raised to close both valves 28, 30 and 34, 36. In the closed position the driver's valve 3 separates the pipe 5 from vacuum and atmosphere, so maintaining the pressure present in the train pipe at that time. The pressure in the train pipe controls a vacuum operated compressed air valve 15 for controlling the admission of compressed air from pipe 17 to the brake cylinders.
