Abstract

660,262. Spray carburetters. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION. Feb. 24, 1948 [Feb. 3,1942], No. 5519/48. Class 7(iii) In a carburetter, valves 16, 29, normally held closed by suction in the induction pipe 7 acting through pipes 19, 32 on pistons 17, 30, open when the suction decreases to allow extra fuel from chamber 9 and antidetonating liquid e.g. water or alcohol from chamber 25 to flow to nozzles 12, 28 respectively to reduce detonation. A choke valve 34 is held closed at starting by a thermostat 35, in which position a pipe 33 supplies air directly to the nozzle 28 and prevents antidetonant being sucked therefrom. When the valve 34 closes after warming up, its upper part closes the pipe 33 and antidetonant can then be sucked from the nozzle 28 when the valve 29 opens. A pump 42 is actuated by the drop in suction in the pipe 7, when the throttle valve is opened for accelleration, to force antidetonant through a nozzle 48. A pivoted vane 50 is actuated by a spring-pressed piston 53 subject to the suction in the pipe 7. Specification 412.597, [Group XXXV], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that exhaust gases may be used as the antidetonant, in which case the means supplying anti-detonant liquid through the nozzle 28 is replaced by a pipe leading to the induction pipe 7 from the exhaust pipe and controlled by a suction actuated valve similar to the valve 29. This subject-matter is not included in the Specification as accepted.
