[Class 83 (iv)] A soldering-iron comprises a body 1 having a hand grip 2, an electrically heated bit 4 mounted at about the mid-point of its length on the body so as to be capable of vibrating and an electro-mechanical vibrator 5 resiliently mounted at about mid-point of its length on the body and coupled to the bit. The bit and vibrator are supported by a metal framework 3 secured to the body 1. The bit is supported by a diaphragm 6 secured to the forward end of the framework 3. The diaphragm 6 may comprise two separate portions attached to the framework by bolts 7 and to the bit by brazing 8. The vibrator is of the magneto-striction type and comprises laminations 9 having a central aperture 10 defining two parallel limbs on each of which is wound a coil 11 which may be glass coated. The transducer is supported by the framework 3 through a resilient support member 12 of a silicone synthetic rubber and is enclosed in a ventilated casing. The bit is electrically heated by element 13 and a switch 14 on the handle 2 controls the supply of electricity to the vibrator. Aluminium may be soldered using the high frequency vibrating bit and a solder preferably composed of 85 per cent tin and 15 per cent zinc. The bit may have a detachable tip portion and its dimensions must be such that its natural resonant frequency at operating temperatures is identical with that of the vibrator.
