Abstract

607,203. Electric resonators. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Jan. 29, 1943, No. 6922/45. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1942. Divided out of 606,794. [Class 40 (viii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] The resonator of a reflex velocity-modulated tube is tuned by the longitudinal expansion of an electrically-heated strut. In one form, a hollow tube 44, Fig. 2, heated by coil 48 wound on insulating layer 45, is supported between two adjustable screws 43, 47 carried in thermally-insulating bushings 53, 54. If the tube is of aluminium, the layer 45 may be an oxide layer. Screw 43 is held in lug 42 secured to the main body 11 of the resonator, while screw 47 is held in plate 17 secured to a flexible end wall of the resonator. If expansion only is to be used, a tension spring 59 is provided to press the screw ends against the ends of the tube 44, while if both expansion and contraction are to be used, spring 59 is dispensed with and the tube 44 is soldered or securely fixed to the screw ends. The heating coil may be wound non-inductively. In a re-entrant form, the thin-walled tubular heated element 61, Fig. 3, extends below the plate 17, its head engaging the bottom of tube 63 of low-expansion material which also serves as a draught shield, being extended above the plate 17 for this purpose. An adjusting screw 65 is provided. -Specifications 535,767 and 606,802, [Group XL (a)], are . referred to.
