Abstract

Class 29 In a sinuous evaporator coil 12 bridged by fins 13, defrosting is effected by passing a low voltage current through the coil and the fins are electrically but not thermally insulated from the coil as by a hard flexible film of a synthetic resin which may be applied by dipping or spraying the coil. As shown, the current is supplied by transformer 14 having two secondary windings connected at one end, this connection being joined to an intermediate point of the evaporator coil and the other ends of the secondaries being joined to the ends of the evaporators. In a modified form, one end of a single secondary is joined to an intermediate point of the evaporator and' the other is joined to both ends of the coil. To give differential heating, several lengths of the evaporator may be electrically connected in parallel, the intermediate point of the evaporator coil can be nearer one end than the other or different parts of the coil can be made thicker than others or of different metals. Defrosting can be terminated by a switch actuated in accordance with the temperature of the transformer.
