Abstract

658,820. Reciprocating pumps for lubricant. P. & M. CO. (ENGLAND), Ltd. April 11, 1949, No. 9770. [Class 102(i)] A grease pump for lubricating railway wheel-flanges and rails comprises a spring-loaded plunger 6 projecting beyond the p u m p housing 1 for engagement with the wheel treads and having a head position 6a reciprocable within a cylinder 5 provided with an inlet port 4 to which grease is supplied under pressure, the plunger forcing grease to the pump outlet 17 through a delivery orifice 11 whose inner end is disposed opposite to the plunger and is permanently spaced therefrom and whose outer end is controlled by a spring-loaded valve 12. The rapid downward movement of the plunger causes a quantity of grease to be delivered past the delivery valve before it can be forced back through the inlet port which has a diameter occupying almost the entire axial length of the cylinder.
