Abstract
658,782. Machinery guards. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd., and BASSINDALE, I. B. Nov. 4, 1948, No. 28627. [Class 80(iv)] The guards 10, Fig. 1, for each head of a combing machine are inter-connected with the starting rod 20 of the machine by means of quadrants 13 on each of the guards 10 co-operating with locking quadrants 15 actuated by the sliding movement of the rod 20 so that the machine cannot be started until all the guards are closed and the guards cannot be opened whilst the machine is in operation. A further time delay device is also provided so that after the rod 20 has been operated through a certain movement to stop the machine its further movement to release the locking quadrants 15 is delayed to allow the moving parts of the machine to come to rest. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 this time delay device comprises a dashpot 26 the piston 28 of which is raised to load a spring 31 by a came plate 22 on the rod 20 'engaging a lever 30 connected to the piston rod 29 when the rod 20 is moved to the right to operate the machine motor switch to start the machine. On movement of the rod 20 to the left the motor switch is opened by the initial movement but a collar 24 on the rod then comes up against the lever 30 so that the quadrants 15 still hold the guards 10 closed. The lever 30 then gradually falls under the action of the spring 31 on the dashpot piston 28 until the collar 24 is released to allow the further operation of the rod 20 to unlock the guard quadrants 13.
