Abstract

614,344. Machinery guards. UDAL, J. D., HARRIS, H. C., and PICKERING, R. S. July 11, 1946, No. 20718. [Class 80 (iv)] A guard c for a power press is mounted on skids d slidable on rollers e in guides a, and is supported by ropes g on pulleys h with counterweights f. A bell-crank lever i, pivoted on one of the guides a has one long arm adapted to pass through a hole j in the guide a and a hole k in the skid d when the guard is closed, and a short arm connected through links m, n, o, and a spring q to the core of a solenoid p. During the upward movement of the slide of the press, a switch (not shown) is actuated through a time-device to close the circuit of the solenoid p after a certain interval. Also a push-button (not shown) is supplied to interrupt the solenoid circuit, and a switch t, adapted to be closed by the lever i moving to its operative position, is supplied to close the circuit of electromagnetic means for starting the machine, which may be controlled by manually operable means. After closing the guard, the switch for de-energizing the solenoid p is operated, releasing the catch i which then locks the guard and actuates switch t to start the machine. Hydraulic or pneumatic means may replace the electrical means, valves thereby replacing the controls.
