Abstract

[Also in Group XL (b)] In a brake press, or other press, wherein a sliding guard 6 is actuated by a cam shaft 4 which also controls the operation of the ram and which is driven by a continuously running electric motor through an electrically controlled clutch and brake, switches 22 in the brake and clutch circuits are operated by a safety rail 21, which may be in sections, resiliently mounted along the bottom edge of the guard so that should the rail meet an obstruction, such as an operator's hand, the cam shaft 4 is brought to rest. Alternatively the brake and clutch may be controlled by a stationary photo-cell co-operating with a stationary light beam passing immediately above the work and under the lowest position of the guard, so that an operator's hand or other obstruction is forced downwards to interrupt the light beam. In operation, on depression of a foot switch the brake is released and the clutch engaged to rotate the cam shaft 4, whereupon cams 5 thereon lower the guard against the action of return springs 19. As the guard closes, a cam 7 opens an air valve to start the ram shaft 9 and a cam 10 closes a switch to energize a solenoid which holds the valve open. A cam 13 opens a switch to stop the cam shaft 4 after one revolution, while a cam 15 on the ram shaft 9 opens a switch to release the air valve after one stroke. The cams 5 allow the guard 6 to be raised rapidly by the springs 19 just before the work is shaped, to avoid obstruction of the work by the guard.
