In a safety device wherein switch and/or valve means automatically arrest a horizontal injection press or other cyclically operating machine should the machine parts commence to move before closure of the starting button, the stop means (not shown) are operated by movement of a slide 16 carrying spring-loaded locking members 18, 19 engaging a ratchettoothed member 12 which is reciprocated by the moving machine parts. In normal operation the members 18, 19 are retracted from the path of the member 12 by electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic devices such as solenoids 20, 23 in the circuit of the starting button. The member 12 is coupled to the machine parts through an adjustable link comprising a ball catch 13 and notched part 11. The composite member 11- 12 slides on a base 15 carrying guide rods (not shown) for the slide 16. The locking member 19, which has a central aperture engaged by a horizontally-slidable cam member 22, is biased towards the teeth 14 by springs 26, 27 acting through cam surface 24 and is retracted by the solenoid 23 acting through cam surface 25. The single starting button may be replaced by a pair of spaced buttons requiring the use of both hands of the operator. Visible or audible signals may indicate the positions of the locking members 18, 19.
