[Class 80 (iv)] A guard for a power press comprises upper and lower sections 12, 13 which move towards and away from each other in guides 11, 11 for closed and open positions, and are attached to the rear and front portions respectively of endless chains 17 passing over upper and lower sprockets 16, 18. The upper sprocket shaft 14 is provided at one end with a disc 23 having a radial slot 24 which is adapted to allow movement of a clutch operating rod 26 by the operator, when the guard is closed, by reason of a plate 28 on the rod entering the slot 24. The clutch may be operated through an air valve 25 actuated by the rod 26 and handle 27. A trip lever 47 connected to the rod 26 is actuated to stop the press by the engagement of a pivoted catch 46 on the moving head 7 of the press when it reaches its upper position after each working stroke. A similar guard in two sections 29, 30 may be provided at the rear of the machine when there are two operators. In this case the guards are interconnected by a sliding rod 38 with V-shaped ends 39, 40 co-operating with notched discs 34, 36 on shaft 14 and a rear sprocket shaft 33 respectively. The arrangement is such that the rear guard can only be opened when the front guard is open and must be closed before the front guard can be closed. In a modification the upper and lower sections of the guards are connected to the ends of a rocking lever instead of to chains as shown. Specification 604,423 is referred to.
