Abstract

654,952. Machinery guards; operating clutches. ATELIERS H. RASKIN. Dec. 11, 1948, No. 32089. Convention date, July 1. [Classes 80(ii) and 80(iv)] In a control mechanism for the safety guard of a mechanical press, a movable member 8 of the guard is connected by links 54, 19 to one arm 20 of a cranked lever pivoted at 23 on the machine frame, tne other arm of which is divided into two branches 21, 22 which are respectively connected to a safety cam 33 and a stop 32 which are arranged m the path of a spring-loaded clutcn actuating arm 30 and are adapted, when the cranked lever is displaced by depression of a rod 25 for moving the guard to its operable position, to be swung in opposite directions to enable the clutch to be spring actuated in the direction which engages the press to operate. The arm 21 is connected by links 27, 28 and 52 to a bush 35 integral with the safety cam 33 and rotatably mounted in a housing 55 secured to the frame of the machine. The stop member 32 is disposed in a recess in the cam 33 and is secured to a shaft 45 disposed within the bush 35 and connected with the lever 22 through links 39, 51, 49. The safety cam 33 and stop 32 are retained in their appropriate positions by springs 37, 41 and a stop 43 against which an extension 42 on member 32 abuts. By virtue of a pin 29 engaging a slot 50 in the member 49, the stop 32 prevents engagement of the clutch until lever 21 has turned through the angle # and the guard member 8 is almost in its closed position. Then, if there is no obstruction to the closure of the member 8, the lever 21 is turned through the angle # and the clutch actuating arm 30 passes between the members 32, 33 and the clutch member 30<SP>1</SP> becomes engaged. A locking cam 31 remains between the members 32, 33 during the working stroke of the slide, and thus prevents any movement of the guard member 8. An inoperative position (shown dotted in Fig. 4), is provided for the arm 3 carrying the movable guard member 8. Removable side guards 17 and a lower front guard 13 are also provided. The guards may be of transparent material in metal frames.
