Abstract

613,381. Machinery guards; actuating clutches. RHODES, C. J. June 19, 1946, No. 18476.. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iv)] In a power press having a clutch-controlling member and an interacting latching member movable by a guard into and out of a locking position, a spring link is provided, connecting the latching member to the clutch controlling member, the said spring link being adapted to be stressed by movement of the latching member out of the locking position, and thereby resiliently to urge the clutch controlling member into the engaged position. As shown, a guard is connected through links 22 to a member 16 pivoted at 17, and carrying a roller 19 engaging a recess 20 in a cam 21 on the driven shaft 1. The member 16 is connected through a spring link 15 and a link 9 to a latch member 11 engaging a lug 8 on the clutch control member 5. The latter is pivoted at 6, and has an extepsion 7 abutting a seating 18 on the member 16, and engaging a lever 4 of a clutch key 3 to keep the clutch disengaged whilst the guard is open. On closing the guard the control member 16 is rotated, the roller 19 is withdrawn from the recess 20, and the seating 18 from the stop 7. The member 5 is rotated rapidly through the spring 15, link 9, latch member 11 and lug 8, removing the stop 7 from the lever 4 of the rolling key 3, to engage the clutch. As the shaft 1 rotates, a roller 23 on a disc 2 engages the toe of the latch member 11, to disengage it from the lug 8. The member 5 then rotates under the action of a spring 13, and the stop 7 thereon is repositioned to abut the lever 4 and disengage the clutch. The guard can then be opened to bring the parts back into their initial positions. The invention is applicable to other types of clutch mechanism by interposing a spring link under compression between a latching member and the clutch controlling means.
