Class 80 (4) In a guard device for power presses and the like in which a manually operable rising screen is interconnected With a locking device' controlling actuation of the ram, the guard 15, Fig. 1, is supported on side arms 22 secured to pivoted shafts 24. When the screen is raised by manual operation of handle 18 a spring-loaded pawl 48 engages behind a detent 47 on an extension 46 of the arm 22 to lock it in the raised safety portion. The arm 22 also releases through linkage 34, 35, 38, 39, 40 and 43 an interlocking pin 44 which prevents a clutch extractor 45 of known form from rotating. The guard when it reaches its uppermost position actuates through a guide roller 25 an air valve 27 to supply air pressure to a control cylinder 30 which operates through a lever 32 and rod 53 the extractor 45 to throw in the clutch and operate the press. At the conclusion of the stroke of the press ram a roller 70 on the main shaft 71 of the press actuates a lever 50 which through rod 49 releases the.pawl 48 holding the guard in radsed position so that the guard then falls to its open position. The arms 22 are provided with extensions 61, Fig. 2, at the rear of the press with counterweights 63 and cam surfaces 68 thereon. These cam surfaces are adapted to be engaged by studs 69 on arms 67 coupled by arms 65 to the ram of the press if the guard should be open when the ram descends so that the guard is thereby closed.
