[Class 87 (ii)] A screw press, of the kind wherein the screw 11 is driven by driving discs 17, 18 forming part of a sliding unit 25, has a compressed air piston- and-cylinder arrangement 36, 37 which acts, through a lever system 34, 31, 30, 26, to slide the discs 17, 18 into the downward driving position. When the ram 13 reaches the end of its downward stroke, a valve 48, is operated, by hand or by a pivoted abutment 54 on the ram, to cut off the compressed air supply and open the cylinder to exhaust. The abutment 54 operates the valve by engaging a roller 58 connected, through a linkage, with the handle of the valve. After the air is cut off, the turning moment of a braking arm 41 and a weight 39 causes the lever system to rock and move the discs 17, 18 into the upward driving position. When the ram reaches its upper limit, the driving wheel 12 engages and moves the braking arm 41, the speed of the wheel 12 being thus reduced and the lever system rocked to move the discs into a neutral position. The cylinder 37 is then opened to compressed air, by hand, to start the ram again on its downward stroke. The abutment 54 is pivoted to prevent it fouling the roller 58 on the up stroke of the ram. Screw means operated by a hand wheel 9 may be provided to alter the angle between bars 40 and lever 26.
