Abstract

621,169. Machinery safety devices. ART METAL CONSTRUCTION CO., HUTSON, A. E., and TELLING, C. T. Oct. 28, 1946, No. 31987. [Class 80 (iv)] Initial movement of the clutch operating pedal 1 of a power press allows a guard 9b supported on a balanced arm 9a to fall into the safety position, a pin 6, Fig. 3, on a rod 6a connected to the arm 9a being released by a catch 5 operated by an arm 3 coupled to the pedal 1. The guard is locked in the safety position by a catch 9 engaging a pin 8 on the rod 6a and at the same time a latch 12 coupled to the rod uncovers a hole in a bracket 13 to allow a clutch extension rod 14 to be moved to permit further actuation of the .pedal 1 to effect engagement of the machine clutch through a rod 21. Thus if the guard is not closed or is obstructed the clutch engagement is prevented. When the working stroke is almost completed a cam 11 on the main shaft 11a releases the catch 9 and lifts the guard by acting on an extension 9d of the arm 9a. The rod 6a moves down and the catch 5 reengages with the pin 6, a part 4 of the catch 5 having been previously dis-engaged from a projection 4a on rod 3a connected to arm 3 of lever 1. While the ram of the machine is on its upward return stroke a cam member 15 holds up the latch 12 until operated by a bracket 16 attached to 'the ram at the top of the stroke. This device ensures that completion of the upward movement of the ram can be effected in the event of the pedal 1 being momentarily released. As the ram completes its upward movement a catch 18, Fig. 1, on an arm 18a is operated to lift a hook 20 coupling top and bottom portions of the clutch actuating rod 21 thus allowing the top portion to move upwards to release the clutch and stop the machine. When the pedal 1 is released the lower part of rod 21 moves upwards to re-engage the hook 20' of the upper part and the part 4 of catch 5 reengages with projection 4a so that the mechanism is reset for a further working operation. A hand lever 2 is coupled to pedal 1 for alternative hand operation.
