Abstract
1444384 Machinery guards SKIL (NEDERLAND) NV 27 Nov 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 54984/73 Heading F2J A safety guard retracting mechanism for a portable circular saw 10 has an actuating handle 44 which permits a lower guard 24 to be swung manually to its open position irrespective of whether or not the work is engaged and which mechanism is releasable from the handle 44 to provide for the automatic closing of the lower guard 24 upon removal of the saw from the work irrespective of the position of the handle 44. As shown, the handle 44 is connected to a lower guard retracting lever linkage 31, 34 by a releasable mechanism formed between a hollow hub on the handle 44, a collar 42 rotatably fast with but axially movable relative to the hub, and a stepped shaft 40, 37 to which the lever 34 is fast thereon. Movement of the handle 44 causes swinging movement of the lower guard 24 to its open position via a spring-loaded peg 59 (Fig. 9, not shown) which is carried by the shaft 40 and engages a one-way cam recess (60) in the collar 42. Continued swinging movement of the lower guard 24 to its fully opened position as a result of being engaged by the work operates the releasable mechanism i.e. the one-way cam recess (60) to allow the shaft 40 to overrun the collar 42 to disengage the peg 59 so that a coil spring 53 axially inwardly moves the collar 42 against a fixed pin 64 to disconnect the handle 44 from the lower guard 24, whereby a return spring 30 will automatically swing the guard 24 to its closed position upon removal of the saw from the work irrespective of the position of the handle 44. Return movement of the handle 44 to its closed position causes a cam projection 63 (Figs. 9 and 10) to engage the pin 64 to axially outwardly move the collar 42 to its original starting position wherein it is reset with the spring-loaded peg 59 re-engaging the one-way cam recess (60) in the collar 42 for opening of the guard 24 again by the handle 44.
