Abstract

857,497. Machinery guards. LOWE (CRANES) Ltd., J. & H. March 12,1959 [March 15, 1958; May.. 16, 1958], Nos. 8374/58 and 15727/58. Class 80 (4). A guard 14, for example for a cotton comber, pivoted at 13 is held locked in its operative position whilst the machine is running, is unlocked after a predetermined time delay when the drive to the machine is discontinued and the machine parts are stationary, and prevents the drive to the machine from being started again until it is in its guarding position. The ends of the guard 14 are connected by a pair of links 19 (one shown) and a pair of axially spaced cams 16 (one shown) pivoted at 17 which, as shown, are locked in position when the machine is running, by pivoted latches 35 engaging recesses 36 in the cams. When the driving motor is switched off a time switch is operated which, after a time sufficient to allow the machine to stop, energizes a solenoid 28 to lift a plunger 30 connected to the latches 35 to unlock the guard and allow it to be opened manually. Opening the guard causes the end 25 of a bellcrank 23 to be lifted from depressions 26,in the cam and the other end 28a of the bell-crank to operate an isolating switch 21 which prevents the driving motor from being switched on until the guard is closed, whereupon switching on the motor causes the solenoid 28 to be deenergized and the latches 35 to fall into their locking position. Spring-loaded links 38 act on the cams 16 to maintain the guard in open position, and have an increased leverage thereon in the open position 37a as compared with the closed position 37.
