Abstract

657,756. Plug stoppers. JELINEK, J. Jan. 1, 1948, No. 77. [Class 125(iii)] A plug stopper for bottles, jars and the like has an annular groove in the plug portion bounded at its upper rim by a sharp edge with a conically inclined surface, the groove holding a rubber ring which, when the stopper is inserted, bends upwards to form a seal between the sharp edge and the bottle neck, the ring having a tongue which can be pulled to break a vacuum in the bottle. In the form shown, the stopper consists of an upper disc portion 1<SP>1</SP>, cut away on each side as shown in Fig 2, and a lower plug portion provided with two flanges, between which a groove 2 is formed. A rubber ring 3, having a tongue 3', fits firmly in the groove. When the stopper is inserted into a bottle neck, the ring 3 is bent up over the sharp edge 2<SP>1</SP> of the upper flange to seal the bottle, the tongue 3' laying in one of the cut away portions in disc 1<SP>1</SP>. When the stopper is to be removed, any vacuum in the bottle is released by pulling the tongue 3<SP>1</SP>, a spike 11 being provided on the stopper so that the tongue may be held extended by looping a hole 3<SP>11</SP> therein over the spike. The stopper may be secured in position by a bayonet catch arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), or by a spring clip, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown).
