[Class 141] A brassiere has a front portion containing four separate stiffening sections extending upwardly from below the breasts and disposed to engage the two sides of each breast, the stiffening material being tapered upwardly in thickness. As shown in Fig. 2, the stiffening sections 11, 12 have serrated upper edges and are enclosed by stitching 16 in separate pockets formed between outer and inner fabric layers 14, 15. The pockets are joined to each other by fagotting or other stitching 17 and to the upper breast sections 18 and side sections 19. The stiffening sections may be cut from a fused strip composed of several plies of fabric, alternate plies, containing potentially adhesive yarns, the upper edges of the intermediate plies being spaced different distances below the upper edges of the outermost plies. In a modification, the sections extend downwardly to control the diaphram, the lower edge of the sections being tapered in width. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the tapered stiffening sections 30, 31 are curved and spaced apart and are secured by stitching to the outer surface of the brassiere fabric 32.
