Abstract

655,741. Hose couplings. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Oct. 29, 1948, No. 28170. [Class 99(i)] A sleeve comprising a portion 14 of reduced internal diameter extending between an end wall 8 and an internal shoulder 12, an external swaging band 16 formed by a thick-walled portion of the sleeve at about the same axial position as the shoulder and of greater or the same diameter as that of portion 10, and a thin-walled hinge portion 15 between the band and wall and having an external diameter less than that of portion 10, is, after the assembly of an insert 5 into the bore of a hose 1, positioned on the hose so that portion 14 lies around an externally recessed part of the hose, the band being then contracted so that the sleeve hinges inwards at portion 15 to displace the resilient material of the hose and grip the hose reinforcement, which may be ribbon-like groups of high tensile steel wire braided to tubular form, between the shoulder and the insert which may have a collar 6 abutting the wall 8. There may be a separate ring forming the swaging band, a separate ring replacing the shoulder and an integral or separate ring 7 of the insert on to which the reinforcement is gripped. The separate shoulder and insert rings may be of a soft metal so that textile hose reinforcement is gripped without damage. The hose may have a plurality of reinforcing layers with intervening layers of resilient material and be recessed such that only the inner reinforcing layer is gripped. In a modification, the insert projects through the sleeve, the end portion of which is swaged into an annular groove of the insert. Specifications 540,490, 553,868 and 640,140, are referred to.
