694,655. Flexible pipes; pipe joints. SUPERFLEXIT, Ltd., and JACKSON, F. R. Nov. 12, 1951 [Nov. 15, 1950], No. 27985/50. Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii). A helical wire reinforcement 12 is a loose or sliding fit in the bore of a pipe 10 comprising a single wall of flexible non-metallic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, which may have an external braided covering or a helical wire reinforcement 23 wound in the same sense as the reinforcement 12 and loosely encircling the pipe; alternatively, there may be a braided layer embedded in the wall of the pipe, and an outer wire reinforcement. The helix 12 may be of metallic or non-metallic material, e.g. tinned copper, galvanized steel, brass, plastic, or a plastic covered metal wire; also, the helix may be wound up on a rod-like former to reduce its diameter for insertion into the pipe, the former being withdrawn after the helix has been released, and be of such a length as to be compressed between end fittings 13 having coned spigot portions 15 onto which the pipe wall is gripped by contracted sleeves 17, the outer helix being gripped between the sleeves and the pipe. Alternatively, the spigot portions are cylindrical and grooved.
