Abstract

655,271. Positive ion tubes. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. March 10, 1948, No. 7406. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (b)] Frequency modulation of a resonator for a cyclotron is obtained by means of a transmission line projecting from the dee housing and terminated at one end by a variable capacity, and at the other end by the capacity between the dee and the housing, thus forming a half-wave resonant system, the variable capacity being substantially less than between the dee and the housing. The resonator consists of a dee 1 of two parallel semi-circular plates with three tubes 3, 5, 6, extending from its curved wall and forming coaxial lines with three cylindrical tubes 8, 9, 10 extending from the flat steel tank 7 which surrounds the dee 1. The plates are hollow and contain cooling tubes. The two dee tubes 5, 6 carry the weight of the dee and are supported in trunnions 11, 12 and clamping rings 13, 14. They are sealed to outer tubes 9, 10 by vacuum seals 15, 16 which permit small axial and angular movements. Annular plates 17, 18 on push-rods 20 tune the lines. The line 3, 8 through which the R.F. power is projected is terminated by a cyclically variable condenser of the motor driven rotating-vane type or a resonant diaphragm as in Specification 655,272, [Group XL (b)]. Power is injected by a coupling loop associated with a grounded grid oscillator valve. The dee 1 is disposed between copper plates 23 in the tank 7, which is of steel lined with copper.
