Abstract

Metal or metal carbide powder is moulded in moulds made of steatite or of graphite compressed and moulded at a pressure of the order of 4000 kg./cm2. The moulding of the metal or carbide powder is effected at a low pressure of the order of 50-100 kg./cm2 in steel moulds, due to the low friction between the metal or carbide powder and the graphite or steatite mould. The mould may be surrounded by a tight fitting metal sleeve exerting a spring pressure on the mould and consisting preferably of two halves clamped together by screws. The compressed powder may be removed from the mould for sintering or preliminarily sintered in the mould and finally sintered outside the mould. Compression of the metal or carbide powder is facilitated by the use of a wetting agent, e.g. alcohol.
