Abstract

653,664. Actuation of switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 21, 1948, No. 13793. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1947. [Class 38(v)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIX] In an electric selector switch a twoedged rack carrying a brush carriage is reciprocated by a pair of pinions which drive the rack in turn and which are changed over from driving to idle at the end of the travel in each direction. Pinions 7, 8, Fig. 1, are mounted on arms 12, 13, of a lever 9 which is rotatably mounted on a bushing 10 so that only one pinion may mesh with the rack 18 at any one time, and the lever 9 is thrown over from one position to the other by rollers 24, 27 engaging ramps 26, 28. The lever is located during travel by a sprung ball 16 in indentations 15 in the end of the lever. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), the driving pinion is latched into mesh with the rack during driving and is sprung out of engagement by flexible ramps on the ends of the rack when the rack reaches the limit of its travel. A further embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8, includes two flexible toothed wheels 206a, 206b which are meshed alternately with toothed wheels 207a, 208a, on the shafts carrying the pinions 207, 208, by means of rollers 233, 235 on arms 232, 234 projecting from a pivoted yoke 221. The yoke is moved: to shift the rollers by ramps 226, 228 at the ends of the rack acting on its arms 231. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an embodiment, Fig. 13 (Cancelled), in which two pinions 307a and 308a permanently meshed with the rack are alternately driven from a single toothed wheel 306 through dog clutches 337. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
