Abstract

296,502. Maatschappij tot Vervaardiging van Snijmachines Volgens van Berkel's Patent en van Andere Werktuigen, and Berkel, C. F. M. van. June 21, 1927. Cutting slices in succession.-A disc knife reciprocating table machine is driven by hand or by power, the transmission mechanism being such that the entire machine can be operated by either the hand or the power mechanism, or part of the machine can be operated by the hand and/or part by the power mechanism, the part of the machine driven by hand being disconnected from the power-driving mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, a motor 4 drives a pulley 8 by a belt 7. The pulley 8 has a free wheel connection, e.g. of the wedging ball type, with the knife shaft 9 which is connected by a sprocket chain 19 with bevel gearing connected with the handwheel shaft 10. A clutch, e.g. a spring-loaded cone clutch, couples the sprocket 18 with the shaft 16, and is disconnected when desired, by a rod 29 and a bell crank lever. When the entire machine is driven by hand, the sprocket 18 is clutched to the shaft 16, and, in virtue of the free wheel, the motor is not rotated. When the sprocket 18 is de-clutched, the knife may be rotated by power and the carriage remains stationary or is reciprocated by the hand gear. The carriage may be reciprocated by hand whilst the knife remains stationary. In a modification, Fig. 4, a counter-shaft 42 carries fast and loose pulleys 41, 44, and a sprocket 40 is fast on the shaft whilst another sprocket 43 is secured to the loose pulley 44. The sprockets 40, 43 are connected by chains 47, 46 to the knife shaft 9 and the carriage driving shaft 16. The carriage and the flywheel are connected to the shaft 16 in the same manner as in the previous construction. The motor shaft drives the belt pulley 6 through a free-wheel and the belt 7 is shifted by a member 48 which is held by a detent in one of three positions and may carry a motor switch at its end. When the entire machine is driven by hand, the belt 7 is in the middle position and wraps both the fast and loose pulleys 41, 44, whilst the motor shaft, in virtue of the free wheel, does not rotate. When the belt wraps either the fast or the loose pulley, and the handwheel is turned, the carriage is reciprocated but the knife remains at rest. When the motor is used, and the belt 7 wraps both pulleys, the whole machine is operated. When the belt wraps the fast pulley 41 only, the knife only is driven by power. When the loose pulley is wrapped, the carriage only is driven by power.
