Cutting slices in succession. - In a slicing- machine of the type having a disc knife and a variable-speed transmission between the driving- member and the knife shaft, a variable gear of the change-speed hub type is employed. As shown in Fig. 1, a belt 1, driven by a motor, passes over a pulley 2 connected with the changespeed hub 3 which is supported by the stationary shaft 4 from a plate 5, the plate 5 being slotted to receive flats on the shaft 4. A tapering sleeve 10 connects the hub 3 with the knife shaft 8 which is supported on balls. A ball bearing 14 is positioned between the hub 3 and the casing 13. A handle 16, pivoted on a bracket 17, operates the change-speed cable 21 in known manner. A chain and sprocket drive may be arranged to connect the knife shaft to the rest of the machine.
