Cutting slices in succession.-In a discknife reciprocating table slicing - machine driven by an electric or other motor, a reduction gear arranged apart from both the slicing knife and its shaft, is disposed at the side thereof opposite to the slicing station, and is operatively connected to the knife shaft and to the countershaft driving the reciprocating carriage. As shown in Fig. 1, the knife shaft 2 and the usual countershaft 3 are rotated by a chain 5 driven from a sprocket 6 on the shaft 7 of the reduction gearing enclosed in a casing 8. The reduction gearing comprises a pulley 11 on the motor shaft 12, a pulley 9 of large diameter on the shaft 7, and a belt 10 which is tensioned by a roller 14. With this arrangement, the operator has unrestricted access to the place where the slices are cut and deposited. In modifications, the knife is driven from the reduction gear by a sprocket chain, and the countershaft 3 is driven from the knife shaft by another sprocket chain, or the knife and countershaft are driven from the reduction gear by an endless belt with or without a tensioning roller, or the countershaft is belt-driven from the reduction gear and the knife is belt-driven from the countershaft, or a pinion on the motor shaft engages a large spurwheel on the countershaft from which the knife is driven by a belt or chain.
