Abstract
652,145. Cycles. PATTERSON, W. J. Nov. 22, 1948, No. 30238. [Class 136 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A pedal propelled driving mechanism comprises a driving sprocket in the form of a toothed ring which is provided with internal ratchet teeth engaged by two sets of pawls or their equivalent, the pawls being operatively connected to the pedals of the driving mechanism the pedals being arranged to cause rotation of the driving sprocket by either reciprocal straight line movement or by rotary movement. The driving sprocket I has internal ratchet teeth 2 and is mounted in a housing 3. The pedals are connected by spindles 9 to trunnions 8 movable in guides 7. The trunnions are connected to blocks 11 attached to endless bands 12 and 16. Spring pressed pawls 15 connected to the bands 12 engage the inner teeth. Vertical pressure on the pedals causes the pawls to engage the teeth 2 to cause rotation of the sprocket wheel which may be effected at the dead-centre positions only if desired. Alternately a rotary movement causes the rotation of the whole device with the sprocket which may be supported on the bicycle by a bracket. Each slot or guide 7 has at its ends spring loaded stops.
