Abstract

651,335. Bottling. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. Aug. 13, 1947, No. 22536. Convention date, Jan. 24. [Class 125(ii)] In an apparatus for applying closure caps of the type shown in Specification 637,745 to containers, a stack of caps contained in a magazine 50 is supported and the lowermost closure detached and conveyed into position beneath a throat chamber 44 by means of a slide 78 which is reciprocated in a slideway formed in a platform 68, as the result of the intermittent relative approach of a capping head and successive containers. If the apparatus is assured to be in the rest position, as shown, with the bottom cap of the stack resting on slide surfaces 80, 81 and another cap, supported by ledges 96, 97, below the throat chamber, then a bottle elevated through an aperture 69 will engage the cap lifting it against a presser foot 116 so that the cap flange is above stops 99, 100. As the eleva- tion of the bottle continues bell-crank levers 54, 55 are swung clockwise thus retracting the slide. The presser foot 116 does not move relative to the throat carrier 34 at this time because a spring 115 is sufficiently heavier than a spring 42 so that the latter alone will yield: however, when the base block 43 strikes a sleeve 26, the rise of the throat carrier 34 will stop and the spring 115 permits the presser foot 116 to rise and the capping operation is normally completed when a presser foot carrier 113 strikes a shoulder 47. As the slide is retracted, blades 92, 93, formed on extensions 87, 88 thereof, detach the bottom cap of the stack by a wedging action, the cap being deflected by blade inclines as at 90 on to the ledges and centred thereon by wall 87<SP>1</SP> and the stops 99 and 100 and the support of the stack being taken over by the blades 92, 93 After the capped bottle is lowered, the throat carrier is lowered by the spring 42 and the slide advances to carry the separated cap beneath the throat.
