Abstract
649,328. Bottling. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. Aug. 13, No. 22537. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1947. [Class 125(ii)] In an apparatus for applying closures to containers, the intermittent relative approach of a capping head and successive containers results in closure caps being detached from the magazine 80 and advanced to the applying position beneath a capbottom of a stack in a ping throat 34 by a slide 129 reciprocating in a slideway formed in a platform 99 having a rear surface 132 which in the advanced position receives and supports a detached closure. Figs 3 and 4 show the apparatus in the rest position in which the stack is supported by portions 68 of magazine fingers which in swinging counterclockwise to the position shown in Fig. 4, detached the lowermost cap with a wedging action so that it was deposited on the rear surface of the slide. If a cap 20, of the type described in Specification 637,745, is assumed to be supported through its flanges 23 on ledges 135, 136 formed by spaced-apart forward extensions 133, 134 of the slide and centred relative to the capping throat by a wall 139 and slide advance limit stops 141, 142 with its top surface spaced below a presser foot 35 a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the stops, then movement of a bottle into engagement with the cap 20 will lift the latter against the pressure foot 35 so that its flange will be above the stops. As the rise of the bottle continues, a throat carrier 31 is lifted, thereby swinging bell crank levers 87 and 88 to retract the slide and also, through a link 150, swing a ring segment 74 thus swivelling the magazine fingers so that the portions 68 move from the supporting position of the stack which drops thereon. As the slide retraction continues, the cap on the slide surface 132 is held against movement therewith by the full-depth portion 58 of a sleeve 46 and as the slide moves to its outer limit the detached cap falls on to the forward supporting ledges of the slide. The upward movement of the throat carrier is arrested by abutment with a bracket 25, the throat 34 is projected somewhat downwardly against the action of a spring 36 and thereafter the presser foot spring yields and the cap is applied. Then the bottle is lowered thus permitting the throat carrier to lower and the parts to resume the rest position.
