Abstract
650,958. Friction clutches. MESCHIA, C. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34353. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 29, 1947.] [Class 80(ii)] A friction multi-disc clutch, two of which may be mounted together on a common shaft for reversing, is engaged in opposition to springs 20 by axially sliding a feathered collar 17 having coned and cylindrical internal surfaces which wedge balls 18 inwards and forwards. off a larger cylindrical diameter 1a of the shaft, over a shoulder on to a smaller cylindrical diameter 1b thereof, where they are locked by the overlying cylindrical surface of the collar and thrust the clutch-discs into engagement through a thrust-sleeve 19. Helical springs 16 or corrugated washers separate the clutch-discs when disengaged and the thrust-member 7 carries a screwadjustable abutment 23 with a lock-pin 22. The disengaging springs 20 are not fully compressed by the engaging movement and thus serve also to limit engaging pressure.
