Abstract

697,636. Friction clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES. Feb. 26. 1951 [June 29, 1950], No. 4640/51. Class 80 (ii). A multi-plate clutch comprising inner and enter plates compressed into engagement by a plurality of cranked levers actuated by an axially slidable sleeve is characterised in that an annular member carrying said inner plates is provided with a plurality of pre-stressed compression springs housed in the annular member and pressing between the annular member and a collar non-slidably mounted on one of the shafts to be coupled. As shown a plurality of friction plates 5 are connected to one shaft 2 and a plurality of complementary plates 6 are mounted on an annular member 7 which is splined to the shaft 1. Axial displacement of the member 7 is limited by collars 19, 20 fixedly mounted on the shaft 1. A plurality of prestressed compression springs 18 engage the collar 19 and the member 7 which is thereby held, when the clutch is disengaged, against the collar 20. A presser plate 8 engages a flange 17 on the member 7 and a presser plate 9 is movable, by means of cranked levers 10 pivotally mounted on bolts 12 in slots 11 in the shaft 1, to engage the clutch. Rollers 14 are provided on the levers 10 to engage an actuating ring 13. When the clutch is fully engaged further movement of the actuating ring 13 is permitted by the springs 18 which allow the member 7 to move together with the presser plates without substantially increasing the engaging pressure. The construction makes adjustment to compensate for wear on the friction plates unnecessary.
