Abstract
686,237. Claw clutches. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 11, 1949 [Oct. 8, 1948], No. 9791/49. Class 80 (ii). A claw clutch disengageable under heavy torque-load comprises a freelymounted intermediate member 17 operable through a ballbearing thrust-yoke 22 by an externallycontrolled lever 40, and having at one end concentric sets 18, 19 of facial clutch teeth engaging complementary teeth 23,24 on driving and driven members 11, 12 respectively, the inner teeth 18, 23 being larger than the outer 19, 24, so as to remain permanently in engageent, and having a pressure-angle such that the torque-load in either direction creates an axialseparating thrust tending to overcome toothfriction and resulting in easy separation of the outer teeth 19, 24 for disengagement under load when restraining force is removed from, or light disengaging force applied to, the lever. The teeth may be of involute or other form, and the disengaging lever may be loaded by an overcentre linkage.
