859,312. Torque limiting couplings. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 16, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956; Nov. 28, 1956], No. 25955/57. Class 80 (2). In a clutch in which the transmissable torque differs in the two directions of rotation the coupling between the clutch plate and the shaft is provided by a friction arrangement which is selftightening in the direction of the highest torque. A clutch plate 14 has secondary friction facings 18 engaged on one side by a flange 19 integral with the bars 16 of the hub, and on the other side by a plate 20 in screw-thread connection with the hub and by an auxiliary plate 21 splined to plate 20 and urged towards the facings 18 by a Belleville washer 23. In one direction of rotation the plate 20 is screwed away from the facings 18 to abut a stop 22 and the transmitted torque is limited by the plate 21 engaging the facings 18 under the pressure of spring 23. In the other direction, the torque is determined not only by the plate 21, but by the plate 20 which is brought into engagement with facings 18 by the screwthread connection.
