Abstract

751,032. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 16, 1954 [April 16, 1953]., No. 7645/54. Class 7(5) In an engine starter having a gear 7, Fig. 1, driven from a gas turbine, for example, not shown, and connected through an overunning clutch 6 to an ouput shaft 15 adapted to be coupled to an engine member, not shown, wherein a jaw connection 13, 14 is interposed between the clutch 6 and the shaft 15 and is urged into engagement by springs 20, latching means consisting of a sleeve 16 and plate 26, which is normally arranged to effect engagement of the jaw connection 13, 14 permitting disengagement of the latter in response to a given torque in a reverse direction (when the engine starts and overruns the starter) to disconnect the starter from the engine. The starter 1 which is attached to the .engine by a quickly operable coupling 4 is provided with a plate 5 connected through the clutch 6 to the gearing 7, the plate 5 having a block 11 splined thereto; the jaw 13 which is splined to the block 11 normally engages the corresponding jaw member 14 on the shaft 15. The sleeve 16 holds the block 11 on the plate 5, which latter incorporates a pin 17 engaging a slot 18 in the sleeve, the block 11 being urged into engagement with the shaft 15 by the springs 20; the sleeve embodies a number of slots 24, Fig. 3, adapted to be engaged by fingers 25, Fig. 1. on the latch plate 26 secured to the shaft 15 by rivets 27, the slots being so designed that torque may be transmitted in one direction only, a reverse torque moving the fingers out of the slots. After starting the clutch 6 normally prevents the engine from over-speeding the starting turbine but in the event of the clutch malfunctioning the springs 20 enable the starter jaws 13, 14 to ratchet thus placing the load upon the fingers 25 which in the reverse direction of rotation drive the sleeve by friction so that upon a given torque being exceeded the fingers disengage the slots whereupon a spring 23 disconnects the block 11 from the shaft 15. The heads of rivets 27 serve as bearings for the shaft 15 upon the jaws 13, 14 being released. Specification 669,107 is referred to.
