Abstract

865,613. Positive clutches. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. June 13, 1958 [June 27, 1957; July 30, 1957], No. 18990/58. Class 80 (2). Synchronization of the engagement of ratioestablishing positive clutches in a changespeed gear is effected by a split-spring ring having on one side a frusto-conical friction surface and a cylindrical friction surface for engagement by similarly shaped surfaces on a ratio-selecting, axially slidable striker hub, and having on its other side a set of teeth coacting with corresponding teeth upon an associated gear-wheel, the split-spring ring baulking engagement of the positive clutch teeth until synchronization has been achieved. In one form, a split-spring ring 5 has external frustoconical and cylindrical friction surfaces 6, 16. engageable by correspondingly shaped surfaces 7, 15 upon a selector sleeve 4 axially slidable upon a splined hub 3 fast with a shaft 1. The split synchronizing ring 5 has internal tapered teeth 9, 9a, 9b coacting with similarly shaped teeth 10 on the hub of a gear-wheel 2 rotatable upon the shaft 1. On initiating axial sliding movement of the selector sleeve 4 to engage splines 13 thereon with clutch dogs 14 upon the gear-wheel 2, the frusto-conical friction surfaces 6, 7 engage so that the split-ring 5 tends to turn relatively to the gear-wheel, the reaction of the teeth 9, 10 on the split-ring and the gear-wheel hub expanding the split-ring and baulking clutch engagement. On synchronization, the baulking effect ceases, and the selector sleeve 4 can then be slidden axially so that the cylindrical friction, surfaces 15, 16 slide over one another, allowing the splines 13 to engage the clutch dogs 14. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the split-spring ring 5 is formed with frusto-conical and cylindrical friction surfaces on its inner periphery and teeth on its outer periphery.
