Abstract
649,940. Locking rods. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and BALMFORTH, N. April 3, 1948, No. 9407. [Class 80(iii)] A locking mechanism between three concentric relatively movable parts a, b, c may be used to provide " lost motion." One or more pins d slide radially in the sleeve b and have chamfered ends to engage annular V-grooves a<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>1</SP>. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the ring a, if moved longitudinally in the direction of arrow A, carries the sleeve b with it, until the pin d is opposite the groove c<SP>1</SP> in the shaft c. The pin is then forced inwards and locks the sleeve b to the shaft c, the ring a continuing movement. On the return stroke of the ring, if the sleeve b is axially loaded the pin d is forced outwards and engages the groove a<SP>1</SP> to lock the sleeve to the ring a again. Alternatively the shaft c may move and carry the sleeve b for part of its stroke.
