Abstract
648,410. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Feb. 13, 1948, No. 4243. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] Relates to a gas turbine driven locomotive (see Group XXXI) in which the turbine 41 extends longitudinally of the locomotive and is in driving engagement at each end with a bogie, such engagement including a shaft 50 and reversible gearing. As shown in Fig. 11 air passes into a cleaning and silencing chamber 48 from a longitudinally facing intake in the upper structure of the locomotive and thence through an axial flow compressor 42 into a combustion system 43. The gas then passes through a compressor - driv - ing turbine 44, a curved annular duct 45 to the turbine 41. The gases are exhausted through duct 46 to an inclined trunk 47 and an outlet 49. The locomotive has auxialiary machinery including a centrifugal pump 56 for extracting deposits from the chamber 48, an electric generator 57, both of which are gear connected to the rotor of the compressor 42, and an internal combustion engine 58 which by means of a clutch can either drive one bogie through a shaft 59 for shunting or drive the pump 56, generator 57 and rotor to start the turbine set.. In a preferred form of gearing for the bogies, Figs. 9a and 9b, a driving shaft 1 universally jointed to the shaft 50 is in splined engagement with members 29, 30 and is in fixed engagement with a sleeve 31 having dog formations at each end. Gears 15, 16 can be brought into driving engagement with the shaft 1 by slidable clutch elements 33 and gears 13, 20 can be brought into engagement with the shaft 1 by rotation of levers pivoted at 34. The gears 16, 20 mesh with a gear carried by a shaft 4 gear connected to one axle of the bogie and the gears 13, 15 are similarly connected by a shaft 2 with the other axle. The levers are operated so that either the gears 13, 20 are connected to the shaft 1 and the gears 15, 16 are disconnected or the gears 15, 16 are driven from the shaft 1 and the gears 13, 20 disconnected. The levers on separate bogies are connected for synchronized operation.
