Abstract

[Class 108(iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A hydraulic shock absorber and timing device incorporated in an automatic feed weigher comprises a cylinder 100 in which slides a rod 102 carrying perforated pistons 103, 104, the latter of which has non-return ball valves 105 which, by closing the perforations during the upward stroke, force the fluid through a port 111 into a passage 110, and then through a port 120, see also Fig. 4, past a needle valve 121 and then via passages 123, 107 past a second needle valve 108 into the bottom of the cylinder. These valves are adjusted to give a predetermined time delay between the application of an upward force on the rod 102 and the completion of the upward stroke. To enable the rod to move quickly at the start and finish of the stroke the pistons 103, 104 form slide valves which uncover ports (not shown) at the ends of the stroke and so byepass the needle valves. The timer also acts as a shock absorber during downward movement of the pistons, which then act as in a normal dashpot and, in addition, a certain control is effected by adjusting the needle valve 108. Air is in contact with the liquid surface in a chamber 13.
