Abstract
554,762. Vibration-dampers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and SIMPSON, J. K. Feb. 16, 1942, No. 2024. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic vibrationdamper, a tubular piston rod carries an annular piston which divides the cylinder into two chambers of equal volume each kept full by connections through lightly loaded valves to a pressure reservoir in the piston, the two chambers being directly connected through restricted orifices with excess pressure bye passes. Tubular piston rod 13 with connecting eye 20 is guided by the ends 11, 12 of cylinder 10 having a connecting eye 18 and carries annular piston 14 forming chambers 15, 16 which communicate with one another and with the reservoir 48 in the pistonrod through passages in a valve block secured inside the piston-rod by pins 22. When the piston moves upwards, liquid flows from chamber 15 through the restricted orifice in spring-pressed valve 31 into passage 36 and past lightly loaded valve 41 into chamber 16. Valve 31 lifts for excessively rapid movements causing high pressure. Reservoir 48 also communicates through passage 37 with chamber 15, 16 to keep them full, the liquid in the reservoir being kept under pressure by a floating piston 46 subjected to two helical springs 50, 51 in series. When the piston moves downwardly, a similar action occurs, valves 32 and 40 then being operative. The spring assembly with floating piston 46 can be unscrewed from the valve block and withdrawn for filling with liquid. The top edge 53 of the sleeve 54, interposed between the springs, is visible through a slot in the tubular piston to indicate the amount of liquid between full and empty limits.
