A control rod 56 in a sewing-machine is connected to a lever 48 by passing loosely through an aperture in the lever and carrying a nut 72 resting on a spring on the lever. The spring is surrounded by a sleeve 73 to reduce lost motion due to compression of the spring. Locking bolts; s c r e w sockets. A pair of plugs 67, screwed into the bore of a member 59, with a resilient washer, preferably of oil-resisting material such as neoprene, under compression between them are adjusted by rotating a rod 56 which is slidable but not rotatable in the plugs and which has an accessible upper end; the rod may be non-circular in section (square in the form shown) fitting corresponding holes in the plugs, or may be circular'and slotted to engage diametrical pins in the bores of the plugs.
