Abstract

648,033. Spring roller-blinds. LAYCOCKENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 10, 1948, Nos. 29165/48 and 7990/49. [Class 20(iii)] In a spring roller-blind with a winding spring 11, Fig. 1, of which one end 12 closely grips a rod 9, one end 19 of which is flattened and received in a flat hole 20 in a fixing bracket 22 and the other of which is supported in a plug 7 secured to the roller 6 and to which the other end of the spring is secured, the other end of the roller is provided with a friction clutch and ratchet arrangement, one element of the clutch being held non- rotatably and the ratchet connecting the roller to the other element of the clutch in one direction of rotation of the roller and freeing the roller in the opposite direction of rotation. One form is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises a rod 25, having a flattened end 19 similar to that of the rod 9 and received in the other bracket, with an adjustable spring 34 tending to press the left-hand face of a ratchet disc 32 into contact with a friction disc 31 and to press that disc into contact with a collar 29 secured to the rod 25 within a bore 28 in a block 23 secured to the roller 6 and in which the rod 25 is carried. A plunger-pawl 40 is normally pressed by a circular spring clip 39 into engagement with the ratchet 32 and as the blind is drawn off the roller the ratchet is rotated against the friction of the washer and is retained in any drawn position by the friction remaining operative. On pushing the blind upwardly the spring, relieved of the weight of the blind, rewinds the roller and the pawl rides idly over the teeth of the ratchet. In another form two gravityoperated pawls are used, one of which is always in position to drop into one of three ratchet teeth. Alternatively a ball clutch may be used.
