Abstract
649,131. Clutches. BRITISH-THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and ADAMS, W. S. Jan. 7, 1948, No. 523. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group X] A positive clutch yieldable to overload comprises a driving member 1, a surrounding driven drum 2 having spread interior teeth 6 and one or more torque conveying flat spiral springs 3 secured to the driving member 1 and having closed outer turns clearing the drum bore and carrying a detent 5 to engage the teeth 6. At rest the spring is coiled adjacent the outer turns but when load is applied it coils round the driving member and on overload pulls the detent 5 radially inwards to effect disengagement until load, reduction. The closed outer turns bias the detent to engagement, but when distorted by disengagement, frictionally contact the drum bore to resist synchronization. The clutch is also discribed as applied to an adjustable insulating strut for limiting the thrust between spaced parts of a reactor.
