Abstract

1,226,037. Micrometers. G.K.N. SHARDLOW METROLOGY Ltd. Oct.14, 1969 [Oct.2, 1968], No.46737/68. Heading G1M. A micrometer comprises an external sleeve 28 rotatably surrounding a portion of a thimble 22, a ratchet 56, 58 provided around the internal surface of the sleeve and a pawl 69 formed by the free end of a spring 64 secured at its other end to the thimble and extending around an annular space between the ratchet and the thimble so that the pawl bears resiliently on the ratchet. When the sleeve is rotated in one direction the pawl abuts an edge of one of the teeth 56 to rotate the thimble but rotation of the sleeve in the other direction only causes rotation of the thimble as long as tne resistance to rotation of the thimble is insufficient to overcome the frictional engagement of the pawl with the ratchet teeth.
