Abstract
Up to 5 per cent by weight of an inorganic amide such as sodamide, or of hydrazine, is added to an anhydrous tetra-alkyl-, tetra-aryl-or tetra-aralkoxy-orthosilicate or to such an orthosilicate which has been partially hydrolysed by an amount of water corresponding to less than 1 1/2 mols. of water per mol. of orthosilicate. The water may be added to the orthosilicate or may be present in the reactants from which it is made. The resultant composition is stable against gelling but capable of forming by reaction with water a film-forming coating, fire-proofing or bonding medium or a siliceous sol for delustering artificial silk. In examples, mixtures which gel in a short time are prepared (1) by adding water to sodamide dissolved in ethyl silicate; (2) by adding aqueous alcohol to a solution of sodamide in tetra-cresyl silicate; (3) adding aqueous hydrazine hydrate to a mixture of ethyl silicate and alcohol. The ethyl silicate employed is prepared by reacting silicon tetrachloride with industrial ethyl alcohol as in Specification 290,717, [Class 2 (iii)], and is thus partially hydrolysed. Specification 612,622 is referred to.
