Abstract
A mixture of 1 to 3 parts by weight of a C1- 6 alkyltrimethoxysilane and 3 to 1 parts by weight of a tetra-methyl- or ethyl-orthosilicate is storage-stable but capable of reacting with water to yield a water-soluble product the solution of which dries to a tough, water-repellent film and may be used to coat porous materials such as wood and concrete. It is also capable of being drawn out of its fibre-glass-like threads. The water-soluble product may also be obtained by first reacting the silane with water and then reacting the reaction product with the orthosilicates. Both reactions are exothermic. In Examples 1 to 3 10 ml of methyl-, propyl- and butyl-trimethoxysilane respectively are reacted with 10 ml water and 10 ml tetraethylorthosilicate is added to the resultant solution. The product is further diluted with 370 ml water and applied to concrete. In Example 4 a mixture of 10 ml. each of methyltrimethoxysilane and tetraethylorthosilicate is mixed with 20 ml. acidified water (0.005N HCl) and the product diluted with 350 ml. water and applied to paper, wood, bricks and concrete.ALSO:Paper, wood, bricks and concrete are coated with the reaction product of (a) 1-3 parts of a C1-6 alkyltrimethoxy silane, (b) 3-1 parts of a tetra- C1 or 2 alkyl orthosilicate, and (c) water (see Division C3). The reaction product is water-soluble but dries in the presence or absence of air to a water-repellent coating. The aqueous solution may be applied by brushing or by spraying using a compressed gas. In examples the reaction products of equal volumes of water, tetraethylorthosilicate and methyl, propyl or butyl trimethoxysilane are used.
