Abstract
1,274,368. Coated products. STAUFFERWACKER SILICONE CORP. 29 June, 1970. No. 31321/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Surfaces, e.g. of glass or masonry, are waterproofed by coating with a water-repellent agent obtained by partial hydrolysis of the reaction product from an organoalkoxysilane and a zirconium or lead salt of an organic acid. The silane preferably contains 0.9-3 'organo groups' per Si atom, and more preferably is obtained by alcoholysis of a mixture of tri- and di-halosilanes, in at least 2:1 molar ratio, with a C1-4 primary or secondary alcohol in an aromatic solvent at 0-50‹C. Suitable salts are those of C1-28 mono- and di-carboxylic acids, used in amounts of 0.25-4.5wt% of the silane (calculated as the corresponding chlorosilane), the silane/salt mixture being refluxed, e.g. in the solvent from the silane preparation. Water is added to obtain 50-80% hydrolysis e.g. by reflux in the same solvent as previously. The product may be applied as a 4-20wt% solution in an organic solvent of b.p. below 200‹C to the surfaces of solids to be made waterrepellent. In Examples methanol is refluxed with MeSiCl 3 , Me 2 SiCl 2 and n-PrSiCl 3 in 3:1:1 molar ratio in xylene; after neutralizing the solution with NaOMe, Zr(OAc) 4 or Pb(OAc) 2 is added and the mixture refluxed, then H 2 O is added and the mixture again refluxed. The product is diluted with ligroin to 5% resin content and applied to a glass plate or concrete cubes.
