Abstract

A water-repellent composition comprises the reaction product of (A) a silane of the formula ZxSi(OR)4- x, wherein each Z is an unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon radical of 2 to 4 C atoms, each R is an alkyl group of 1 or 2 C atoms and x is 1, 2 or 3, (B) a silane of the formula Si(OR)4, A and B being present in a volume ratio of from 1:3 to 3:1, and (C) water, the total volume concentration of A and B in the mixture ranging from 1 to 70% If desired, methanol and/or ethanol (D) can be added in amount of up to twice the volumes of A and B. An acid (E) preferably diethylhydrogenphosphite or ethyldihydrogenphosphite, and a peroxide catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and 2,5 - bis - (t - butyl - peroxy) - 2,5 - dimethyl hexane, may also be added. Where paper or cloth is to be treated, the composition should be made basic, prior to use, by the addition of a weak base, e.g. triethylenediamine, triethylamine or ethanolamine. In a typical Example (1), methanol, diethylhydrogen phosphite and water were added to a mixture of monoallyltriethoxy-silane and ethylorthosilicate, and after completion of the reaction, further water was added and the resulting composition was brushed on to separate concrete slabs and allowed to air-dry. Uses.-For waterproofing porous materials, e.g. concrete, bricks, paper and cloth.ALSO:Porous material, e.g. concrete, bricks, paper or cloth, is rendered water-repellent, by applying to the surface thereof a composition comprising the reaction-product of (A) a silane of the formula ZxSi(OR)4-x, wherein each Z is an unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon radical of 2 to 4 C atoms, each R is methyl or ethyl and x is 1, 2 or 3, (B) a silane of the formula Si(OR)4, A and B being present in a volume ratio of from 1:3 to 3:1, and (C) water, the total volume concentration of A and B in the mixture ranging from 1 to 70% (see Division C3), and allowing the treated surface to dry. An acid (E), preferably diethylhydrogen- or ethyldihydrogen-phosphite, (D) methanol and/or ethanol, and an organic peroxide catalyst, may also be added. Where paper or cloth is to be treated, the composition should be made basic, prior to use, by addition of a weak base. In Examples, (1, 2, 7) concrete slabs, (5, 6) paper, and (3, 4) bricks, are treated in the above manner.
